The new manga Dr. Stone by INAGAKI Riichiro is a science fiction story where human life was all turned to stone. A mysterious phenomenon caused all of humanity to turn to stone causing the deaths of many people and the sudden end to human civilization. For the next 3,700 years, the main protagonists would survive until one day they would be liberated from their stone imprisonment. 3,700 years from now without humanity, the world has changed greatly with man-made architecture and technology being submerged by nature. The landscape and geology has changed greatly as well. Now with the revival of the protagonists, the world has entered a new age known aptly as a stone age.
The romance theme behind this manga is nice. It is also dark in a humorous and ironic way as the main protagonist, Ooki Taiju, was about to tell the girl, Yuzuriha, how much he loved her for the past five years. However, the moment, he gets the opportunity to tell her that then all of a sudden everyone in the world is turned to stone. Ironic but it will mean he'll have to wait centuries to tell her. The other character, Senkuu, is abnormally smart. He is intellectual and knows a great deal about chemistry, biology, and the outdoors much more than say his peers. His knowledge and expertise may set him up to being a savior to those who were liberated from their imprisonment. The ideals in the story is interesting as Senkuu's ideals of saving all of humanity and Tsukasa's ideal of saving those who are pure of heart come to clash. I find this interesting as it is a clash of what would be great for the world. Senkuu's ideal is more altruistic and noble as he just wants to liberate everyone from their imprisonment to restart civilization than Tsukasa's as his has an underlying and deadly bias that is hypocritical and lacks benevolence. While the story progresses, this conflict of ideals will become more important. So far, five chapters in to this story and it is good. The characters juxtapose one another well and are unique for their setting. The premise of the story with the strange stone age event is great. Just would like to know what caused that event to take place.. The idea of starting from scratch is good especially with the conflicting concepts of how humanity should start back whether it is Senkuu's ideal of everyone returning or Tsukasa's ideal of those who are good returning. This is a good science-fiction story with interesting plots.
